The dream is dead

Almost all hopes of watching Notre Dame play for the national championship died in Notre Dame Stadium today.

The final score, 47-21, doesn’t really sum up the beating Notre Dame took today. So let’s take a look at a few facts.Notre Dame had six net yards with seven minutes left in the first quarter.

It was 20-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Irish didn’t get a first down until about mid-way through the second quarter.

Shell shocked.

Notre just never looked in the game. The defense made a few plays early, but that unraveled when Michigan made massive plays on offense.Brady got hot late in the first half by going 7-7 on the last drive of the half.

It was a last gasp touchdown that seemed to hint at a comeback.

Charlie Weis talked to NBC Sports just before the third quarter and seemed his usual calm self.

“Just about everything you could do wrong, we did do wrong,” he said. “We’ve got our work cut out for us.”

That was the “no sh*t” moment of the day. His team finished the first half 108 yards and six first downs. That’s not the offense that was going to carry the team to the BCS game.

It wasn’t much better on defense. Michigan 168 passing yards at the half and 12 first down. The rest of the game was really just an ugly blur of confusion. The Wolverine offensive line took control with its zone blocking by just gashing the Irish defensive. Brady continued to be off and the fans in the stadium grew silent.

Not much to point out as a positive here. So what happens now? Notre Dame goes on to Michigan State, which beat a good  Pittsburgh team today. National championship dreams have turn to Wolverine nightmares.
